Just where exactly are the lost ten tribes?

Today’s gospel study is D&C 133:26-34 which has to do with the return of the lost Ten Tribes in the Last Days. I have always wondered from where they will return. Where exactly are the ‘North Countries’ on this earth? After much study I have come to the conclusion that the Ten Tribes are no longer on this planet and have not been for thousands of years. I don’t think I am the first to reach this conclusion. I have heard this many times over the years but never had a source until today. First the scripture:

“And they who are in the north countries shall come in remembrance before the Lord; and their prophets shall hear his voice, and shall no longer stay themselves; and they shall smite the rocks, and the ice shall flow down at their presence. And an highway shall be cast up in the midst of the great deep. Their enemies shall become a prey unto them, And in the barren deserts there shall come forth pools of living water; and the parched ground shall no longer be a thirsty land.

“And they shall bring forth their rich treasures unto the children of Ephraim, my servants. And the boundaries of the everlasting hills shall tremble at their presence. And there shall they fall down and be crowned with glory, even in Zion, by the hands of the servants of the Lord, even the children of Ephraim. And they shall be filled with songs of everlasting joy. Behold, this is the blessing of the everlasting God upon the tribes of Israel, and the richer blessing upon the head of Ephraim and his fellows.”

In connection with these wonderful prophetic verses, I today came across the following quote which is attributed to Joseph Smith. In it he clearly states that a planet will come alongside the earth, overtake it and then position itself in a stationary location over the north pole of the earth. At that point, there will be some sort of joining mechanism between the two planets, causing a highway to be established between them. Over this highway will come the Ten Tribes.

Can you imagine what will happen to the waters of the earth with the attraction of another planet over the North pole? I would hate to live North of any large body of water at that point. Think about it. There will be a worldwide catastrophic inundation as the water from the equatorial regions suddenly rushes to the Northern polar region. Imagine the water in the Gulf of Mexico. Where will it go? How about the water in the Mediterranean? Think of the great devastation that will cause as it travels Northward at a frightening speed.

Here is the quote:

“Now let me ask you what would cause the Everlasting Hills to tremble with more violence than the coming together of two planets? Scientists will tell you that it is not scientific: that two planets coming together would be disastrous to both; but, when two planets or other objects are traveling in the same direction and one of them with a little greater velocity than the other, it would not be disastrous, because the one traveling faster would overtake the other.

“And relative to the Great Highway which should be cast up when the planet returns to its place in the great Northern Waters, it will form a highway and waters will recede and roll back. Now as to their coming back from the Northern Waters; they will return from the north because their planet will return to the place from whence it was taken. When this planet returns it will make the earth that much heavier, and it will then revolve slower.”

Source: The Last Days by Robert W. Smith, Pyramid Press, Salt Lake City Utah, 1947, p.130. The story took place at the home of Bishop Benjamin Brown in Nauvoo in 1843 or 1844. It was related to his son, Patriarch Homer M. Brown of the Granite Utah Stake. Although it is not a firsthand account, it is consistent with other statements like this recorded by Orson Pratt and Parley Pratt, quoted in a previous post. They all stated that this was taught by Joseph Smith.

  1. See also Hymns, 1891, no. 322:”Thou, earth, wast once a glorious sphereof noble magnitude,And didst with majesty appear, among the worlds of God.”But thy dimensions have been tornasunder, piece by piece,And each dismembered fragment borneabroad to distant space.”When Enoch could no longer stayamid corruption here,Part of thyself was borne awayto form another sphere.”That portion where his city stoodhe gained by right approved; And nearer to the throne of Godhis planet upward moved.”And when the Lord saw fit to hidethe “ten lost tribes” away,Thou, earth, was severed to providethe orb on which they stay.”And thus, from time to time thy sizehas been diminished, tillThou seemest the law of sacrificecreated to fulfil….”When Satan’s hosts are overcome, the martyred, princely raceWill claim thee, their celestial home—their royal dwelling-place.”A ‘restitution’ yet must come, that will to thee restore,By that grand law of worlds, thy sum of matter heretofore.”And thou, O earth, will leave the trackThou hast been doomed to trace; The Gods with shouts will bring thee backTo fill thy native place.”(Eliza R. Snow, Sacred Hymns and Spiritual Songs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, SLC, Utah, 1891, 322; first published in Millennial Star, 13:17.)

  2. I think that hymn was taken out of the hymn book in 1912 for a reason. I think that a lot of the 10 tribes are still on the earth, in the northern countries like the Baltic States, Scandinavia, northern Asia, etc. I think the whole “seperate planet” theory is kind of far-fetched, and there isn’t a whole lot of valid evidence to back it up.

  3. More plasma theology. Great stuff! You ought to check out Rodney M. Cluff’s stuff, too, concerning the lost tribes.

  4. Thank you Tim/Mr.Gary for your posts. I have since a child known and pondered the words of that hymn. I have written you once before about a repeating dream/vision I had had that led me to search out the meaning of some disturbing and very odd images. This is how I found out for the first time of stories regarding “planet x” and the potential of a large solar system body with a huge elliptical orbit. That our sun may actually be a binary system which in astronomy is a common occurrence.Which them eventually led me to find you. I actually wanted to post to ask the forum about a couple of things. I am having a change come over me which has come in increments through my life after various severe health issues and near death experiences. Being raised LDS it is not a reach to “believe” in spirits and “supra natural”. I grew up on the stories of my grandmothers’ and the many spiritual gifts they had given to them that helped keep them and their family safe. Now for me I am becoming sensitive to changes and I know I can’t be the only one that is changing. I am becoming more aware and developing new gifts at an alarming rate. I also have had my first taste of the darker side and opposition of being able to interact on a spirit level. Though it is off from my question if you would like or if it fits into any forum I would be happy to share in greater detail what has been going on. To sum it up. It has just made me even more in awe at the greatness of the Lord and I see his hand in all things. I want to ask if there are others willing to talk with me about the changes in the way the earth feels. Either in vibration/frequency or in any other perceptible way to them. I also want to ask about the book of Enoch. Please forgive me if this has been discussed. I scanned past blogs but may have missed it. Do you know what the official current stance is on this work? What do you think of it. I find it compelling for the fact that what has been happening to me is coming full circle and then I stumble upon this book and it has in it many of the ideas I have been introduced to and given knowledge of through the spirit. I am not for sure what it all means for I am sure I am not done yet. I feel as if I am reading a book and skipping through it. Not in order and only pieces. Trying all the while to figure out if I am reading a comedy, drama, action, or crazy sci-fi/fantasy book! I get impatient and want to skip to the end and read the ending but I have not recieved those pages. OK I know stupid analogy!..its just the mental image I get! I am curious what is known about it by your forum and if there are any other works that are similar. I also had a really creepy incident with my computer. Have you ever heard of a being trying to get you to open up a portal to a not so good place through sending you odd “formulas” during live chat until you either repeat it in your head or aloud, like someone from behind a door shouting what the lock combination is to you on the outside? All this while not knowing really what it is they are doing? I am not making it up, honestly. I am asking sincerely. I would love to hear any comments from anyone. Please don’t waste your time if it is just to bash. I may sound a little off to a lot but I am sincere. I am looking forward to your comments and appreciate varied opinions. Best wishes, Shelly

  5. Gathering Israel was the topic in sunday school this past sunday, and this verse really stood out to me after reading your post. D&C 110: 11. which reads: After this vision closed, the heavens were again opened unto us; and Moses appeared before us, and committed unto us the keys of the gathering of Israel from the four parts of the earth, and the leading of the ten tribes from the land of the north. Correct me if I am wrong please. But it seems to separate the two. Israel from the four parts of the earth. And the leading of the ten tribes from the north. It also seems to say that the ten tribes( at least at the time when this revelation was given to Joseph Smith) are still together in this land of the North. Whether that land be lands on this earth, or another planet that at sometime was north of the earth, I don't know.

  6. The hollow earth….Sorry I don’t have time to write a long comment but yeah…..the ten tribes could be inside the earth. Google it, youtube have some videos on this theory. …Peace. Nat from New Zealand 🙂

  7. Hi Natalie,Nah, I don’t go in for the hollow earth stuff. I know they do over at LDS Anarchy but after researcing it I am convinced that it is both bad science and a hoax that is being perpetuated. As we read in the introduction to the Wikipedia article:Hollow Earth is a belief that the planet Earth has a hollow interior and, possibly, a habitable inner surface. The hypothesis of a Hollow Earth has long been contradicted by overwhelming evidence, as well as by the modern understanding of planet formation, and the scientific community now dismisses the notion as pseudoscience. The concept of a hollow Earth has recurred as a premise for adventure fiction, and also features in some conspiracy theory and folklore. That’s about how I feel about it. On the other hand, I believe that the Ten tribes are indeed on a planet somewhere in our universe, possibly on their way to our solar system right now. I hear bells going off in some of your minds. Tim’s lost it you may say. Well, I confess that it is an unusual belief, but the quote in the essay above and the quotes in this essay are what cause me to believe this.

  13. D&C 28 was given to one man and only relevant for Oliver Cowdery. Joseph Smith never once said he was perfect or without error. The Book of Mormon is full of fallen Presidents of the Church though they were then called the Chief High Priest and King. Noah is the prime example he was the Chief High Priest thus prophet and president of the church look how far astray he led it and it took God forty years and calling two Prophets out of the land. No one set hands on these two Prophets. God alone gave them their authority. God is the same yesterday today and forever. The Bible and Book of Mormon are clear on how Prophets are called out of the land. Read Acts and it’s talk about prophets Paul never doubted them being Prophets.

But the two planets coming together is utter garbage. If Joseph said this it did not come from God. The tidal waves from it would wipe out nearly all life to say nothing of the earthquakes. Indeed scientist would scoff at this.

I find mostly God says what he actually means. If he says they will come out of the North they will. He does things in the easiest way possible and living underground is by far the most likely way he preserved the ten tribes. There are many ways he could do this. All far easier than taking them to another planet..

    1. Hi Steve,

Wow, you found a really old thread on which to leave your comment. I have no idea why you’re quoting D&C 28 when the post was about D&C 133. That’s an interesting way to introduce yourself as a first time visitor to a blog – stating that something is utter garbage. You’re right that most scientists would, and have, scoffed at the idea of two planets being in close proximity to one another, that is, until they started finding them in their telescopes a few years back, you know – binary planets. As long as they stay outside the Roche limit, things are good.

In fact, we have an example, close by that you can see every night – it’s called the moon. And you’re right, if two planets came too close, there would be tremendous destruction including tidal waves (the sea heaving itself beyond it’s bounds), to say nothing of the terrible earthquakes that would rack the planet. I think we are basically in agreement that it would be a catastrophic event, very much like what is described in John’s Book of Revelation as some of the signs of the very last days.

As far as knowing if the Prophet Joseph taught this doctrine, I don’t think any one of us will ever know until we meet him and ask him. You’re right, some of the people who wrote, testified or swore that they heard him teach this doctrine may have been lying or making it up for reasons only known to them. I included a few of the resources for those interested in looking them up. There are more for those who are interested. This is always going to be a controversial subject until the Savior returns. We will all then know because the whole world will see the grand sign of His return.

Finally, as far as the lost Ten Tribes living underground, your guess is as good as mine. I have read some good speculation with great reasoning and support to go along with this theory. However, I decided years ago to go with the idea that they were removed from this planet just as the City of Enoch was removed. My source for considering this started with the writings of Anthony Larson (MormonProphecy.com) thirty years ago. I highly recommend you look up and read his material. I’ve written a lot about his stuff here on my blog over the years.

Thanks for leaving your comment. Nice to learn more about you on Facebook. I always appreciate learning more about my readers. Do you blog somewhere? I’m curious to read more of your ideas.

  14. the lost tribes could be some under earth, some scattered around earth like Elder McConkie says, and maybe some with Enoch’s city somewhere in space; it could be a combination of these.
